This is the second edition of a work that went through about 5 editions. When first published, Elliott's work of fruit was the most comprehensive for the West. Elliott lived in Cleveland, Ohio and his Fruit Book was only suceeded by Hopper's Western Fruit Book in 1857. According to Hedrick, "This was comprehensive - a complete guide to orcharding in the whole country and the largest horticultural work yet published..." (Hedrick, Hort. Amer.)
