England: 1906-1913. Maroon cloth. Oblong 8vo (17.5 x 21.3 cm). Maroon cloth binding with gilt title on spine, vertical parallel line tooling on boards, minor wear to ends of spine and corners. Collation: [12-tipped in folded typed sheets], [c.250] pp., illustrating 488 pen and ink drawings with watercolor washes of wild flowers around countryside villages and towns in England and Scotland. The plates are very clean with only an occasional spot. Leaves, pedicles and flowers plants are illustrated with Latin and common names and location and date drawn. There is a note for one plant that it was copied in 1912 although the date beneath the plant is dated 1906. This rare album is beautifully illustrated from field sketches that were copied and colored the same day. This unusual and rare collection of British wildflowers is separated into Dicotyledons and Monocotyledons on the preliminary folded typed sheets. On these sheets the listing of plants follows a somewhat taxonomic scheme with family heading followed by individual plants in three columns. First column has number of drawing in album in front of common name; second column Latin genus and species; and third column- location found. Most of the plants in the album are dicots on ten (10) typed sheets and monocots on the last two (2) sheets. On second typed sheet of plants there are two ink corrections for the names of genera for Caryophyllaceae. Very Good. Item #0000632
N.M. Oddy is not listed in standard biographical database for United Kingdom, but certainly is an accomplished artist and botanist who provide common and Latin names for plants he/she observed and drew from nature. There are no duplicates in this album which indicates that the author had a good knowledge of plant identification through personal experience or professional use of published flora.
