This is the last work by Bernard and represents lectures that he delivered in the academic year of 1859-1860, as a course in medicine at the College of France. The first 20 lectures were collected and published by Mathias Duval, the remaining 9 lectures had been published first in English by P. Ball and had been retranslated into French by Gaston Decaisine (Grmek) "Arranged in four parts, the treatise discusses general physiological processes, the techniques and methods used in experimental physiology, physiology of the circulatory system along with experimental phyarmacology, and the physiology of the digestive system." (Heirs) (Garrison and Morton 634; Grmek p. 319 #53; Heirs of Hippocrates 1801; Osler 1519; Waller 955).
