The text covers embryology of representative dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants complemented with lithograph plates. This is a remarkable compilation of anatomic and fine cell detail for development of ovaries and embryo sacs wth penetration of pollen tube of latter. This is major work from a significant contributor to botanical science who discovered alteration of generations in plants. Hofmeister is "the most outstanding figure among a constellation of brilliant botanists of the (19th ) century, and one of the great botanists of all time, ranking with Theophrastus, Cesalpino, Ray and Linnaeus. his research was almost entirely done between four and six o'clock in the morning before the normal day's work- a remarkable feat. His earliest, truly classical studies of the structure, development and reproduction, of the angiosperms, gymnosperms, and higher cryptograms, which constituted his most important work, and which raised the science of botany to a new state."(Morton, 1981).
