Provenance: Ink signature of "Francis Ellingwood Abbot 1868"on front free end paper of Volume II and pencil notations on the recto of the rear free end paper. Abbot was a Unitarian minister educated at Harvard University and Meadville Theological Seminary. He preached a free religion ministry aligned to the scientific method and that each person can learn truth for themselves. He was brought to court in 1868 for his views and declared insufficiently Christian to serve his congregation. Abbot left the ministry and went on to write several books, one on Scientific Theism.
