Original paper boards with Japanese woodblock flowers, plant containers and grasses on front cover; rear cover with negative image of flowering plant in gray and black wash. Covers with wear along edges; spotting and stains at fore edge of front cover; spine repaired at tail with some loss. Collation: 32 folded leaves of text and plants, verso front cover with colored woodcut of Japanese garden and pond, recto of rear board with catalogue of books on Japanese gardening, floral art and arrangement. Some foxing on front and rear covers and facing pages. The decorative colour woodblock illustrations were printed by T. Hasegawa of Tokio,Louis Boehmer, was a German citizen who migrated to America in around 1866, working as a gardener in Rochester, New York. In 1872 he moved to Japan and became head of a government-owned American run farming operation. After the breakup of the farm he established his own nursery in 1882, specializing in exporting Japanese plants and bonsai to Europe, the United States and Australia. In 1872 he moved to Japan and became head of a government-owned American run farming operation. In 1890 Boehmer sold his nursery to his partner Albert Unger
