Nichol, was an educator, astronomer and adminidtrator who did much to popularize astronomy in the 19th century through lectures and writings such as Views of the Architectue of the Heavens (1837) and System of the World (1846). He was instrumental in raising money by public subscription for the new Horselethill observatory, Glasgow, which was completed in 1841. (ODNB) The present scarce work on Neptune was written along with several other astronomy books to clear debts incurred books (Wellcome, rec. no. 1117794).
